South Africa’s theatre landscape carries the stories, struggles, and triumphs of its people. As we build the future of this industry, let us do so with unity, courage, and imagination. SATIC is honoured to serve the practitioners, visionaries, and institutions that keep our stages alive.
The South African Theatre and Industry Chamber (SATIC) serves the South African theatre, musical theatre and opera cluster sector as one of the 17 clusters created by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC).
The South African Theatre and Industry Chamber (SATIC) is the national coordinating body mandated to strengthen, regulate, and advance the South African theatre ecosystem. We work to bring together theatre makers, producers, organizations, and institutions across the country to support a thriving, ethical, and globally competitive performing arts sector.
Our mission is to provide structure, advocacy, policy alignment, and industry-wide standards that protect creative workers and elevate the quality of South African theatre. We collaborate closely with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) who serve as a strategic partner and oversight authority, providing technical, policy, and financial support where applicable.
Collaboration also extends to include the other 16 Creative and Cultural Clusters, and provincial partners to ensure that the theatre industry is recognised, resourced, and represented at every level.
Based on input from you the artists, SATIC represents this sector by ensuring accountability across the sector and advocates for the cluster:
• We aim to champion development and transformation within the sector.
• Promote sector regulation and professional standards towards fair labour practices.
• Relook at existing policies and engage them to better the sector.
• To foster a collaborative relationship between DSAC and the sector, and facilitate a healthy working relationship between the two.

The title of the organisation includes only Theatre as its primary cluster description:
However, we remain steadfast in serving the entire sector cluster including theatre, musical theatre and opera. The use of the umbrella term theatre is due to the definition of the terms as:
Theatre is a collaborative form of performing art that uses live performers to present experiences of a real or imagined event before a live audience in a specific place, often a stage. The performers may communicate this experience to the audience through combinations of gesture, speech, song, music, and dance.
Musical Theatre is a style or genre of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical – humour, pathos, love, anger – are communicated through words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole.
Opera as a genre of classical music, is a form of western theatre, in which music is a fundamental component and dramatic roles are taken by singers. Opera is typically a collaboration between a composer and a librettist and incorporates several of the performing arts, such as acting, scenery, costume, and dance.
Therefore, using the overarching term Theatre is inclusive of all these styles and genres, and speaks to all forms of storytelling performance in a designated space in front of an audience.
Whether you’re an artist, producer, institution, or cultural partner, SATIC exists to support your journey and strengthen the industry we all love.
SATIC is led by a diverse board of practitioners, administrators, and sector leaders elected to represent the full spectrum of the South African theatre landscape. Together, the board ensures transparency, strategic direction, and accountability in all Chamber activities.
This governance structure ensures that SATIC reflects the diversity, needs and ambitions of theatre communities across South Africa.

Ensure you are kept informed and up-to-date with SATIC activities, activations and consultations in your province.
